How does the river grading system work?
GRADE 1: EASY
Fast moving water with very small waves and without obstructions. Passages are obvious and easily navigated. Risk to swimmers is slight; self-rescue is easy.
GRADE 2: NOVICE
Simple rapids with regular small waves, easy eddies, and gradual bends. Wide, clear channels make navigating easy without scouting. Little manoeuvering is required, and rocks and obstructions are easily avoidable. Rapids that are at the upper end of this difficulty range are designated Class II+.
GRADE 3: INTERMEDIATE
Rapids with strong currents, large waves, powerful hydraulics, and obstructions that may be difficult to avoid. Controlled manoeuvres are often required to navigate, although passages are simple and have relatively little objective danger. Scouting is advisable for inexperienced parties. Rapids at the lower and upper end of this difficulty range are designated Grade 3- and Grade 3+ respectively.
Grade 4: ADVANCED
Difficult yet predictable rapids with large, irregular waves, boiling eddies, powerful hydraulics, steeper gradient, and some unavoidable obstructions. Passages are often difficult to recognize, and require precise boat control and skillful manoeuvering to navigate. Scouting is likely necessary for safe passage, and self-rescue is difficult. Rapids at the lower and upper end of this difficulty range are designated Grade 4- and Grade 4+ respectively.
GRADE 5: EXPERT
Long, powerful, obstructed, and unpredictable rapids that expose paddlers to significant danger. Rapids are steep with large, unavoidable waves and major hydraulics, congested chutes, and many obstructions. Complex, demanding routes require precise boat control, "must make" moves, and a high level of mental and physical fitness. What eddies exist may be small, turbulent, and difficult to reach. Scouting is necessary but may be difficult. Swims are dangerous, and rescue is often difficult even for experts. Proper equipment, extensive experience, and practiced rescue skills are essential.
GRADE 6: EXTREME
All previous difficulties increased to the absolute limit of practicability, suitable for teams of specially prepared experts only. Runs of this classification are rarely attempted and often exemplify the extremes of difficulty, unpredictability and danger. The consequences of errors are very severe and rescue may be impossible.

Will you take pictures or videos of my trip?
We often take photos and videos. Those who wish to take home a copy will have the opportunity to ask our photographer. Should you wish to arrange photos in advance, please let us know and we will make sure to have a photographer along on the trip.
How safe is rafting?
Statistically rafting is safer than most things we do, including driving our cars, walking up and down stairs, and probably even eating lunch. Rafting often gets stereotyped as an "extreme sport" because it is an exciting outdoor-adventure activity. What this means is that it is subject to the unpredictabilities of nature and its outcomes cannot be guaranteed. That being said, the rivers we raft are very familiar to us and safety is always our number one priority. We do not hesitate to cancel or discontinue a trip if the level of risk becomes too high. We prepare all participants with thorough instruction and safety briefings as well as with the best personal safety equipment (helmets, buoyancy aids, and wetsuits) and guides in the industry.
Our equipment
Possibly one of the most fun methods to get down rivers. You will have up to 6 paddlers in a raft with a guide sitting at the back of the raft calling commands. “Forward, back paddle, jump right, left turn and hold on” may be a few instructions they will use. Our IRF certified instructors are very skilled at their job, guiding you through the Ahansal canyon safely.
We use Aquadesign products as our equipment. The company remains leader of the market of the raft in France like in European countries such as Italy, Spain or Portugal.

Why rafting in Morocco?
As rafting and kayaking becomes more established in Morocco new routes will open-up, but here are the top 4 :
Ahansal River: Open for business from March-June and typically run as a 4 day trip from Marrakech. Buried in the Atlas the Ahansal River carves through 80km of mountain scenery providing a stunning backdrop of saw-tooth peaks to vertiginous gorges. The river itself is fairly lazy and suited to beginners, although there’s usually some white-water.
Assif Melloul: A beautiful gorge hidden in the High Atlas of Morocco. Its a scenic class 3 river suited for beginners, although class 4/5 in high water conditions.
N’Fiss River: A family friendly day trip from Marrakech, but one that’s guaranteed to get the heart beating a little faster. The rafting takes place over 20km of the N’Fiss River and is a great way to get a glimpse of Berber mountain life.
Ourika River: Ramping up the grades the Ourika provides the opportunity to test your technical rafting or kayaking skills. Again just a short hop from Marrakech the river is divided into three sections to suit all abilities. Single sections can be paddled in a half day or all three combined for full day on the river.
For kayakers there are so manny rivers to explore but here are a few:
Akka Tifloute: This river is for experienced kayakers who are looking for missions (class 4/5). Get in touch with us for logistics.
Akka Ifisfes: This river is only runnable with a lot of rain (class4).
Oued Ouzoud: Most tourists come here to enjoy their tajine with a stunning view of the infamous Cascades. But kayakers come here to explore the lower section (class 3/4).
We also run guided kayaking trips. For more info get in touch with us.

Berber People
Berbers (Imazighen / Imaziɣen) are the indigenous people of North Africa west of the Nile valley. They are continuously distributed from the Atlantic to the Siwa Oasis, in Egypt, and from the Mediterraniar to the Niger River. Historically they spoke the Berber language or varieties of it, which together form a branch of the Afro-Asiatic linguistic family. Today, varieties of Maghrebi colloquial Arabic are spoken by a large portion of Berbers besides the Berber language itself. Foreign languages like French are used by the educated in Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria. Spanish is also known by some Berbers in Morocco and in the annexed Western Sahara and Italian in Libya. This presence of European languages was due to Europe's occupation and colonization of the Berber world. Today, most Berber-speaking people live in Morocco and Algeria as well as scattered throughout Tunisia, Libya, Western Sahara, Mauritania, Mali and Niger, as well as various diasporas from these countries (particularly in France).
The presence of the Arabic language and dialects is due to the spread of Islam and to the immigration of some Arab tribes to the region centuries ago. A Berber is not necessarily only someone who happens to speak Berber. The Berber identity is usually wider than language and ethnicity, and encompasses the entire history and geography of North Africa. Berbers are not a homogenous ethnic group and encompass a range of phenotypes, cultures and ancestries. The one unifying force is the Berber language and an identification with the Berber heritage and history.
Many Berbers call themselves some variant of the word Imazighen (singular: Amazigh), possibly meaning "free people" or "free and noble men" (the word has probably an ancient parallel in the Roman name for some of the Berbers, "Mazices").

UNESCO
The M’Goun geopark, located in the Moroccan central region of Tadla-Azilal, has obtained recently the UNESCO “Global Geopark” label.
"M’Goun Geopark is located in the middle of the Central High Atlas mountains in Morocco. The Central High Atlas is the highest and largest of mountain ranges in the country. The geological heritage of the Geopark includes outstanding mineralogical and paleontological features, like abundant dinosaur trackways of theropods and sauropodes, geomorphologic sites like the Jurassic limestone bridge Pont d’Imin Ifri, or waterfalls, and impressive conglomerate cliffs. There is also ample evidence of human occupation since prehistoric times including rock art and artifacts.. Its rich cultural heritage, bears witness to the centuries-old presence of the Amazigh (Berber) people with typical traditional architecture and granaries."

Donate to the locals
The Berbers live in a rural area with extreme weather conditions. We are based in a small village called Iminwarg, isolated from the world where the locals have limited access to facilities such as clothes, shoes, sleeping bags, head torches etc... Every year we try to donate as much as we can to support these people. We work with local mountain guides, drivers, cooks and mules. If you would like to support the Amazigh people, you are more than welcome to donate.
What is a Gite?
The Gite is a very basic Berber accommodation somewhat akin to a youth hostel in terms of relative 'luxury status'. Your bed is a thin matress on the floor of a small dormitory. Make your own bed with the supplied sheets and blankets. They have a restaurant, western toilets, showers. Your best chance to experience the real Morocco rather than a pimped up hotel. No swimming pool or bar. :)
The staff will make you feel like you always have been here with their kindness and hospitality. This place is where you will share moments with travellers who seeks these secret places. The Gite "l'auberge a la Cathedrale" is located right in front of the famous "Cathedral Rock" in a little village called Iminwarg in the Tamga National park in the Ahansal valley. This is our base for all of our activities (trekking, rafting).

Should you wish to arrange any meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) in advance, please let us know and we will make sure to have it ready before you arrive.
Do i need a travel insurance?
Your safety is as important to us as your holiday enjoyment. To this end compulsory travel insurance is a must for all our trips. All clients must be covered for personal accident, medical expenses, cancellation, curtailment and repatriation. In addition, as our trips are run in some very remote areas, this should also include helicopter Med-Evac. All clients must supply us with a copy of their insurance details prior to the trip departure. Failure to do so could mean Berber Rafting refusing to allow the client to participate on the trip due to safety issues. As well as presenting us with a copy it is also highly recommended you take a copy of your policy on your trip with you.
